Eminem gives 'em a gig to remember at Etihad Stadium 802793-eminem

IT'S been 10 years since Eminem performed in Melbourne.

Last night’s instantly-sold-out Etihad Stadium show also demonstrated how far he’s grown as a live performer in that decade.

Firstly, he’s sober after a brief retirement. Em told the Melbourne crowd he doesn't even recall his 2001 Australian tour, which wasn’t exactly a pinnacle of live performance. "Tonight I'm gonna remember this sh-- this time," he said.

So will the 65,000 fans (including Foo Fighter Dave Grohl and US comedian Kathy Griffin) hanging on his every word. Eminem now tours with a full live band, not just a DJ – and it makes a major difference. As Jay-Z showed at the same venue almost exactly a year ago, hip hop with real musicians takes it to the next level live.

Em cherry-picked from his well-loved back catalogue, wisely bypassing some of his more novelty moments like Just Lose It and Ass Like That.

Great recent tracks Spacebound, Won’t Back Down and Not Afraid sit comfortably alongside hits Cleaning Out My Closet, Toy Soldiers, Sing For the Moment, The Way I Am and a brilliant medley of crowd-pleasing early favorites The Real Slim Shady, My Name Is and Without Me.

Indeed it was not until the final songs - including the classic Lose Yourself and future classic Love the Way You Lie - that you heard an entire track. The rest was more like a live mix tape - just a verse and a chorus of most songs, two verses and two choruses if you were lucky. Considering his impressive way with words it would have been nice to hear the whole unhappy ending in story-fuelled tracks like Stan.

Rapper Royce da 5’9 came out for their hit collaboration Lighters – creating a genuine moment when the crowd brought the chorus to life by illuminating the venue. Em also rapped his parts in other peoples’ songs like Airplanes and Dr Dre’s I Need a Doctor.

While it wasn't the longest stadium show at around 80 minutes, and the first 20 of those minutes were hampered by poor sound, the rapper seemed be genuinely as happy to be back on stage as the fans were to see him back up there.

US rapper Lil Wayne warmed up the huge crowd with a set that went from loved-up ballads to hard rock, as well as a skateboard ramp on stage. And Adelaide hip hop act Hilltop Hoods proved they are right at home in a stadium these days.
