Darren Aronofsky was previously attached to direct before David O. Russell. Both Matt Damon and Brad Pitt were also once attached to play Dickie Eklund before the role went to Christian Bale.[2][3]
Bale has reportedly been training for the role. About the film, he said, "It’s a true story of two incredibly gifted boxers who were half brothers. The one, Dicky Ecklund, who fought Sugar Ray Leonard at a very young age, when he was twenty one, was an incredible natural talent. He lived a very hard life. Then he came to train his brother, Irish Mickey Ward, to the world title." [4] Wahlberg also trained for two years for the role of Mickey Ward.[5]
Filming began in July in Lowell, Massachusetts.[6]
Christian Bale lost weight and wore prosthetics to resemble the aging Eklund.

He's said to be playing the part of undefeated 22-year-old Ukranian-born Jewish boxing phenomenon Dmitry Salita.
The rapper has reportedly recruited Lennox Lewis' old trainer Emanuel Steward to prepare him for the role, reports XFM.co.uk.
Steward said: "I put him through his paces and I was amazed that he was as good as he was. Since then, he's trained regularly and I've put him in the ring with some top-notch sparring partners.
"He's improved enormously. He's aggressive, a real slugger. He moves a lot like Muhammad Ali."
